Nars All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation

Leslie here, reviewing another cult fave for you guys! So many people swear by the Nars All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation so I wanted to see what the big to-do was all about. And now that Nars is finally available at Ulta, you can use rewards points on it! Keep reading for my thoughts!

The Product

Nars All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation, available in 20 shades. 1 oz for $49.

This will mark the FOURTH time I have tried to find a shade for me. The first time I swatched it in store, and ended up with Mont Blanc (light w/ pink undertones). But Sephora lighting is so god awful that it was completely wrong- way too light and made me look like a ghost. So I returned that and gave up for a while. Stopped back into Sephora one day and got a SAMPLE (I should really go this route more often) of Punjab (medium w/ golden, peachy undertones) but it pulled so yellow. Just gave up and forgot about it.

But then! Nars became available at Ulta, and I have a 20% off coupon so I went for it one last time. I knew the previous two wouldn’t work, so I went with Vallauris (above on the left), described as medium with pink undertones. SEEMS ABOUT RIGHT, NO? No. It was so orange and oxidizes further. So I then reordered in Deauville (above on the right) – light w/ neutral balance of pink & yellow undertones- but it is so pale yellow!

My swatch photos aren’t the greatest- photographer Leslie thought late afternoon would be a great time to take natural sunlight photos. The photo is a little warm, but you can still see the undertones in the shades.

This foundation comes in a beautiful, quite hefty, glass bottle with a pump, so A++ for packaging!

The Claims

This is an oil-free foundation that delivers full, natural-looking coverage with one drop, for lightweight, 16-hour wear. Sweat- and humidity-proof, it instantly neutralizes redness and dullness, while it works to reduce discoloration for more even, uniform skin. Said to be suitable for all skin types.

The Application

This product is extremely watery – you need to shake it up prior to pumping AND be super careful once you pump some out. It will literally run down your hand if you’re not careful.

I don’t know how much they consider ‘one drop’ to be- because it is not dispensed from a dropper. But two pumps were enough to FULLY cover my entire face. This stuff is super full coverage and blends out very easily (I used a brush). It took two seconds! Although a beauty blender is not always the best for watery foundations, this one did well with it too as it helped to sheer it out a little.

The finish was natural, as  promised. It was not overly dewey or matte, and was not cakey. It DID however settle into my lines on my forehead. My pores were not exaggerated, but they were also not blurred (not that it promised this, but it is always nice to skip that step in priming!).

The Wear

You guys. I got oily. But! It doesn’t claim to prevent that, and it didn’t even start out matte so I was not expecting much. I just expected a little bit of give considering it is for ALL skin types. But I think here is where the ‘Luminous’ part of the name comes in, because your girl got REAL luminous. The shades oxidized on me too. So by noon I was just a greasy orange mess. It was not a good look.

It started to slip around a little as the day went, doing that gross ‘pool up around your nose’ thing. Not at all what I expect for a foundation that touts 16 hour wear. All of these factors combined made what started out as super lightweight and natural start to look super ‘makeupy’.

The Verdict

This foundation did not work for me for multiple reasons. While I love the packaging and the watery-ness, everything else misses the mark. For one, I cannot find a shade to save my life. And no, I’ve never been “matched”, but one of those four I tried should have been even remotely close!

And I probably shouldn’t have even tried something labeled ‘luminous’ in the first place- but it said it was great for all skin!! So I don’t totally blame myself. But you heard it here, oily skin posse! This is not a great choice for ACTUAL oily skin.

And finally, this does not last 16 hours. I did not find it to be sweat and humidity proof as claimed.

If you are looking for a super full coverage, lightweight product and have normal, maybe even dry skin, you might love the look and feel of this foundation. But for me, there are many better options out there.
